Meet Your Reunion National Co-Chairs

Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec

Greg Berlanti and Julie PlecBeginning in their undergraduate years at Northwestern University and enduring into their work as Los Angeles–based television producers, Greg Berlanti ’94 and Julie Plec ’94 enjoy an earnest friendship spanning more than three decades.

They have collaborated on hit shows like Dawson’s Creek and Riverdale, and their upcoming series, The Girls on the Bus, is due out in March.

Now, the two artistic souls are crafting a new adventure together as national co-chairs of Northwestern’s Reunion 2024 in November.

How did you two meet?
Greg: We met on a student theater production our junior year and became fast friends. I had just finished writing my first play and shared it with Julie. She gave me some good notes, and we’ve stayed friends for 30-some years now.

Julie: That’s right. We moved to Los Angeles within six months of each other and lived on the same floor of the same apartment building at one point. I even officiated Greg’s wedding. We’ve always had a creative bond and a friendship rooted in support, especially as we were coming up in the industry together.

Why did you answer the call to be Reunion co-chairs?
Julie: Greg’s been a gold-star alum involved with the school in so many different ways, and I’ve been quietly envious of that. I really loved my time at Northwestern and am proud of Northwestern as an institution, so I always wanted to engage with the school. The opportunity to be on this fun ride with Greg was it.

Greg: Anytime I have served the school in any capacity, it’s always been incredibly rewarding, and leading a great celebration like Reunion alongside Julie is particularly meaningful. It allows us to celebrate our friendship and, hopefully, encourages everyone to reconnect with Northwestern and come back in full force with friendships.

What’s your pitch to alumni to attend Reunion?
Julie: We all remember what Northwestern was back in the day, but the University has been on such an incredible journey over recent decades. From the growth of its academics, resources, facilities, and athletics to turning out some incredibly successful alumni, it’s time for everybody to come back and celebrate what Northwestern is today.

Greg: My history with Northwestern is that it always gives to me more than I can give to it, so I can’t imagine Reunion won’t be a blast and rewarding for those who make their way back to celebrate.
