A Man, A Plan, A Canal: Panama

In January 2007, NAA travelers sailed the Caribbean from Miami through the Panama Canal to Costa Rica on an eleven-night cruise aboard the luxurious Crystal Symphony, joined by Joseph L. Schofer (GMcC65, 68), Professor of Civil Engineering and Transportation and Associate Dean for the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Passengers explored five ports-of-call and enjoyed the breathtaking tropical sights of the Caribbean while Professor Schofer shared his expertise and insights into the fascinating construction of the Panama Canal.

In his first lecture, “Fulfilling Impossible Dreams,” Professor Schofer discussed the motivation behind constructing this modern world wonder, the challenges of megaprojects and the lessons learned along the way. His lecture “Panama Canal Today & Tomorrow” explored the canal’s limitations, technical and economical operations, and its role in global logistics.

Professor Schofer's lecture notes are available in Adobe PDF format for you to download and view:
