Alumni Show Wildcat Spirit in Hawaii
More than 150 Northwestern alumni and friends attended President Henry Bienen’s “Welcome Reception” at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort on Thanksgiving Eve (to see photos, click here). In attendance were alumni from Hawaii who were joined by a group of Wildcat fans from the U.S. mainland who had traveled to Hawaii as part of “NAA’s Hawaiian Football Getaway.”
The kick-off reception on November 24 included a short program where local alumna Gaye Miyasaki (SESP78) was thanked for her volunteer involvement, and in return she presented President Henry Bienen with a wooden hand-carved statue as a welcome gift from Hawaiian alumni. She also presented Leigh Buchanan Bienen with a beautiful Hawaiian lei.
Just before the Wildcats vs. Hawaii football game on November 27, more than 250 alumni and friends gathered for a Hawaiian-style tailgate (to see photos, click here) at the lush Village Green at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort. On this warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, a Hawaiian trio serenaded them as they socialized and helped themselves to a variety of foods. The highlight came as Mark Murphy, Northwestern’s Director of Athletics, and “Willie the Wildcat” and the Spirit Squad arrived to pep up the crowd.
The NAA Hawaiian Football Getaway tour was an athletic tour offered by the NAA Travel Program. The next football tour is being planned September 15-18, 2005 to coincide with the football game against the Arizona State University Sun Devils.
