NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY ALUMNI CLUB OF NAPLES
August 2008
Dear NU Alumni:
Hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer with friends and family. Here in Naples we are making plans for the 2008-2009 season for our NU Alumni Club. Our membership currently numbers 228 and is growing yearly. Do let us know if you know NU alums that are not part of our membership. Additionally, we are happy to report that four local new freshmen are beginning college life in Evanston for a total of nine students from Collier and Lee Counties.
In review of last year, your previous participation and support enabled our club to provide $12,000 in financial support for the University. The general scholarship fund received $9,000; School of Medicine $1,000; School of Music $1,000; and the Athletic Department $1,000.
Last season began with a luncheon at The Port Royal Club featuring Nancy Gustafson, world-renowned opera singer and Artist-in Resident at the School of Music, and accompanied by Toni Marie Montgomery, Dean of the School of Music. In January we were fortunate to hear a stimulating presentation by Richard K. Burt, M.D., Chief, Division of Immunotherapy for Autoimmune Diseases, Professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine. At the March “tailgate dinner” Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald and Athletic Department representative Shon Morris gave a review of the 2007 and a preview of the new recruits and training.
Now we are looking ahead to the upcoming season in Naples. Headlining our mid-November program will be a distinguished Professor at the School of Law. On Saturday, January 24, 2009 Steven T. Rosen, M.D., Professor and Chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Feinberg School of Medicine, will bring us up to date on the latest news about cancers, research and treatments.
The Northern Trust of Florida, Naples, will graciously host and underwrite a cocktail party on Monday, February 24, 2009. This event generates contributions for the club’s scholarship fund and is always popular with our members. Most appropriately, this year’s event will honor Lavern Norris Gaynor, our own amazing alum in Naples and a generous philanthropist to our NU Alumni Club, Northwestern University and many fine charities here and in Illinois.
Again, the March spring-break finale of the season will feature the Athletic Department with new Athletic Director Jim Phillips and Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald. Go Cats!
Some members are expressing an interest in joining other NU alums at some smaller informal events – lunch, cocktails, dinner, potlucks, etc. If you are interested in attending and/or helping organize or host, please contact Greta Sims, our new Hospitality Chair, at rgsims@att.net .
Please keep in touch with your news and ideas; we want to hear from you with your suggestions and faculty contacts for future programs and host locations. Also, do contact our club administrator Karen Lannan with your address/phone/email changes at klannan@comcast.net. We appreciate your continued support for our great Northwestern University and look forward to seeing you in November in Naples.
Best Regards,
Patricia Balton Stratton, President, pabstratton@aol.com
