Wildcats Discuss "Biotech, Nanotech and Your Health" at the New York Public Library

More than 130 people attended the Northwestern Alumni Association’s annual “A Night With Northwestern” program at the historic New York Public Library in midtown Manhattan on March 20, 2007. This year’s program featured three of the nation's preeminent scientific scholars speaking on “Tomorrow’s Cures, Today’s Entrepreneurs: Biotech, Nanotech and Your Health.”

The evening began with a welcome reception in the magnificent Trustees Room at the New York Public Library hosted by Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Dean Daniel Linzer. Wildcats of all ages enjoyed food and beverage while mingling with the dean, presenters and fellow alumni and friends.

Following the reception, attendees moved to the Library’s South Court Auditorium to hear presentations by Professors Thomas Meade, Thomas O’Halloran, and Mark Ratner, pioneering voices in Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Each presenter discussed scientific breakthroughs and private enterprises emerging from revolutionary new branches of research, leading the audience on a journey from the laboratory to the bedside as they discussed the groundbreaking areas where science, engineering, technology, and medicine are coming together to alter the way medicine is practiced.

Many attendees glowingly praised the event afterward, one person commenting “I attend school events for a number of universities and this was one of the best I have ever experienced.” Another person commented that the event was an “incredibly stimulating, lively evening, inflected with wonderful humor and, given the complexity of the topic, in user-friendly language!” A final commenter summed up the evening by stating “Excellent choice on presenters. All three scientists (Meade, O'Halloran, and Ratner) are clearly top researchers in the university, and a good representation of where Northwestern is headed.”
