NU Club of West Michigan Gets Inside the Movies
February 26, 2008 – Professor David Tolchinsky, who chairs and directs the Creative Writing for the Media program and directs the MFA program in Writing for the Screen and Stage, presented a lecture and discussion titled, “I'm Ready For My Close-Up: Understanding the Beginnings and Endings of Movies.” More than 60 attendees learned and discussed the relationship of beginning and ending to plot, character arc, and moral; they then were invited to share reactions and even pitch their own screenplay ideas.
“Professor Tolchinksy shared great screenwriting secrets,” said Susan Kraus Jones, Treasurer of the NU Club of West Michigan. “He also included a mix of classics and recent films in his presentation which resonated with everyone in the audience. Dr. Tolchinsky’s lecture also set a record for attendance—the topic was interesting to all of our members and friends, especially two days after the Academy Awards.” The presentation and cocktail reception were held at the Applied Technology Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Attendees included members and friends of the club, as well as members of the West Michigan Film Video Alliance.
