Mark Murphy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, discusses the challenges facing the athletic program as the University strives to balance athletic and academic excellence. Murphy also talks about changes in intercollegiate athletics nationally. He is joined by current student athletes who share their experiences in and out of the game and answer questions from the audience.

About the PresenterMark H. Murphy became director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation at Northwestern University on June 16, 2003. A 1977 graduate of Colgate–where he was captain of both the football and baseball teams–Murphy brings a varied background to the position. He holds a master's in business administration from American University and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He worked on his MBA in the off-seasons while a player for the Washington Redskins pro football team.
When Murphy completed his playing career, he served as assistant executive director of the National Football League Players Association. After receiving his law degree, Murphy was a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as a radio commentator for National Public Radio (NPR) for 10 years, analyzing football games and commenting on other sports issues. Murphy became Colgate's athletic director in 1992. Murphy and his wife, Laurie have four children.
