Another Great Day in Evanston
A record number of Northwestern alumni, students and friends attended A Day With Northwestern in Evanston, the 38th annual seminar day on April 21, 2007. More than 400 people enjoyed the daylong event, which showcased 14 interesting and enlightening presentations by prominent alumni and distinguished faculty from each of Northwestern's undergraduate and professional schools.
Acclaimed Opera Singer, Nancy Gustafson (GMu80), who is also artist-in residence at Northwestern University's School of Music, delivered a charismatic keynote address to a sold-out crowd during lunch. Gustafson began by performing two songs and then spoke candidly about the impact Northwestern has had on her career and life, as well as her experiences traveling the world as a performer.
Richard Gephardt (C62, H92), former House of Representatives Majority and Minority leader and two-time presidential candidate, gave the afternoon keynote address. Gephardt reflected on his own experiences in American politics as he spoke to audience members about challenges facing our nation including such topics as globalization, healthcare, education, the environment and terrorism.
Author and Northwestern History Professor Carl Smith captivated audiences with his talk about architect David Burnham and the impact of his Plan of Chicago. Bob Vanderhye(McC68), spoke to a capacity crowd about renewable energy and it's impact on our lives now and in the future. Law Professor David Scheffer presented on the moral high ground in American foreign policy. Award-winning author Karen Page (WCAS83) shared tips from her book What to Drink with What You Eat. A host of other timely and compelling topics from medicine and the media to sports journalism rounded out the day.
