The Sport of Singing

Being a successful singer is as much about training one’s muscles as it is about producing a beautiful sound. With the help of two talented Northwestern University School of Music students, Professor Karen Brunssen introduces us to the fundamentals of singing and gives us a glimpse into the athleticism of vocal performance.

About the Presenter

Karen Brunssen
Associate Professor of Voice and
Coordinator, Voice and Opera Program, School of Music

Co-chair of the Department of Music Performance Studies, Professor Brunssen is a mezzo-soprano. She has made solo appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra and Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Houston, St. Louis, National, San Diego, Seattle, Milwaukee, Netherlands Radio, and Mexico City Symphony Orchestras. In addition, she has appeared with Buffalo Philharmonic, Cincinnati Opera, Music of the Baroque, Blossom Festival, Waterloo Festival, Grant Park Festival, Chicago Opera Theatre, Carmel Bach Festival, Colorado Music Festival, and Prague Autumn Festival. Her recordings include Telemann’s Day of Judgment, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with Music of the Baroque. Other recordings on Decca and Vox MMG.
