About Professor William J. White

Professor William J. White is a faculty member of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Kellogg School of Management. He teaches organizational behavior, engineering entrepreneurship, and general management. He is a recipient of the Northwestern Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence and was honored as the McCormick professor of the year in 2001.

Prof. White's research focuses on behavior-based leadership. He is conducting a study to contrast the behaviors of CEOs of high performing companies with the behaviors of CEOs of less successful organizations. His latest book is entitled From Day One: CEO Advice on Launching an Extraordinary Career. He has been a frequent guest on TV and radio shows.

He served as Chairman of the Board of Bell & Howell Company from 1990 through 1997. He was Chief Executive Officer until February 1997 and president until February 1995. Previously he had served as Chairman of Whitestar Graphics, Inc. He has also held executive level positions at USG Corporation, Masonite Corporation, Mead Corporation and Hartmarx Corporation.

Prof. White is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Intermatic Incorporated and Forest One, Inc. He also serves as a board member/trustee of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, Northwestern University, The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Foundation and The Field Museum.

He is an Industrial Engineering graduate of Northwestern University and he received an MBA degree from Harvard University.
