Portrait of the Artist as a Wildcat: Donald B. Williams (C55)
As part of our selection of framed artwork, NAA is pleased to offer an exclusive view of University Hall by artist and alumnus Donald B. Williams (C55).
His work can be found on prominent display in venues across the country, including Washington National Cathedral, the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, and the Maryland State Capitol. He has also executed a variety of Congressional portraits.
Williams' lifelong interest in art has included only one semester of formal training, but during his years at Northwestern he found creative outlets in designing sets for Waa-Mu shows (1952 and 1953), the 1953 Homecoming badge, and program covers for many student productions.
After graduation, Williams went to work as a scenic designer for WGN-TV. But when the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call offered a chance to return to his hometown, he put down the paintbrush and picked up the editor's pen. Only in the mid-eighties did he return to a rt as a profession, concentrating on historical subjects in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
Working in pen and ink from photographs, Williams spends an average of three months completing a finely detailed work like University Hall.
