A Bowl in the Sun
NAA’s official tour to the Vitalis Sun Bowl drew 287 alumni, family and friends of the University from across the country to El Paso, Texas for three days of spirited fun.
The NU Pep Band and Cheer Squad–and “Willie the Wildcat”–welcomed the travelers at the NAA Welcome Reception and buffet dinner (see photos) on Wednesday night, which featured remarks by President Henry S. Bienen and was broadcast by WNUR Radio via the Northwestern Athletics Web site.
The following day, as a preamble to the athletic competition, Northwestern’s musical contingent went head-to-head with UCLA in a “Battle of the Bands" before the Wells Fargo Sun Bowl Fan Fiesta (see photos). That evening, attendees packed the Wildcat Lounge at the host hotel. On game day (Friday, December 30), nearly 800 Northwestern fans gathered at the sold-out NAA Wildcat Tailgate Party (see photos), located just outside the Sun Bowl stadium. NU Athletic Director Mark Murphy addressed the crowd, and the NU Marching Band, Cheer Squad, Lady Cats and Willie the Wildcat revved up the crowd’s excitement and enthusiasm. Later, in the stands, a sea of purple shouted and cheered with unbeatable enthusiasm.
The ultimate loss to UCLA, 50-38 (for full game details, click here), didn’t diminish the love of the fans (see photos) for their favorite team.
Just wait until next year…
