Class of 1971: 35th Reunion October 20-22, 2006
Thanks to all those who made our 35th reunion a success! Coming soon...notes and photos from the weekend.
Class of 1971
DO YOU REMEMBER…
• Frisbees and Be-Ins on Deering Meadow • The bite of the wind off of Lake Michigan in February • Sailing on Lake Michigan for gym class in late November… • Studying for finals on the beach • The early amazing days of Amazing Grace coffee house… • Bergen Evans’ lectures to a packed house • “Rocks for Jocks” • The Lovin’ Spoonful, Simon & Garfunkle, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, Sly and the Family Stone, Laura Nyro • Sit-ins at the Rebecca Crown center • Pizza from the Spot at 2 am… • Where you were when Martin Luther King, Jr. and RFK were shot… • Buses to fraternity and sorority parties at third-rate Chicago hotels to drink barely drinkable champagne because Evanston, home of the Women’s Temperance Union, was dry. • Seceding from the country after Kent State • “T” grades given for courses not completed while we boycotted classes • The Rock in the CENTER of the walkway between Harris and University (why did they move it?) • The end of fall rush • Bridge games in the grill • The plans for the “new” campus on the lake-fill • The day thousands of alewives washed ashore on the beach by Fisk Hall… • The first draft lottery... • The day the Mets won the World Series • The day the Wildcats went to the Rose Bowl!
Yes, Northwestern and Evanston have changed a lot in 30 years – those buildings on the lake have greatly expanded the campus, creating a glorious refuge to study, jog, read or dream…Evanston is no longer dry… and we are a bit older but hopefully wiser.
