The Class of 1969's 35th Reunion
October 29-31, 2004
A WEEKEND PAINTED PURPLE: HOMECOMING AND REUNIONS 2004by Carl K. Yorita, M.D. (WCAS69)
A warm October sun smiled on Northwestern and her alumni as Reunion Weekend commenced. Friday, October 29, was a whirlwind of activity as returning sons and daughters familiarized themselves with a larger and more complex world than they had left years ago. Unlike prior Reunions, the Deering Library lawn served as the headquarters for registration and lost alums with the erection of a giant tent. At this oasis, alums could find refreshment, rest, and orientation from smiling and helpful Northwestern staff.
The Campus and Residence Hall tours were nothing short of amazing. The landfill has grown into a botanical paradise for the flora and fauna of the northern Midwest. Lecture halls, research laboratories, classrooms have multiplied in number and size. One practically had to have a GPS unit in order to navigate the vast campus for familiar sites like Tech and The Rock. Newer residence halls, like Slivka boast their own coffee shops/small dining facilities. Amazing!
Northwestern’s academic progress was showcased in the afternoon by the Alumni College Series/Classes Without Quizzes, and energizing lectures. Those alums contemplating a midlife change could engage the skills of the University Career Services in one-on-one sessions. Later, proud alumni presented their Class Gifts to President Henry Bienen at Scott Hall. Tuition covers only 60% of the University’s operating costs, so these gifts are of critical importance to our Alma Mater.
As night fell, the All-Class Reunion Bash roared on at the Tent while Sheridan Road transformed itself into a ghoulish highway. The Homecoming Parade, “The Nightmare on Sheridan Road,” featured goblins from different residence units, campus organizations and sponsors. For the more civilized, the School of Music presented the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the Pick-Staiger Concern Hall.
Saturday, October 30 greeted eager fans with a Pregame Breakfast at the Reunion Tent. The tense Homecoming Game featured NU vs. Purdue at Ryan Field. The strong winds favored Northwestern, foiling Purdue’s canny passing tactics. The Wildcats tore into the Boilermakers, rolling to a 13-10 victory. The crowd roared and the earth trembled, under skies of purple and white. Go U, NU!
The celebratory mood set the tone for the Class Parties where alums shook hands, hugged, laughed and renewed friendships with a vigor, which can only be characterized as “Wildcat Spirit.”
Sunday, October 31st offered alums the choice of a Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues, or a cruise on the Chicago River highlighting the impressive architecture and history of this vibrant city. The docent on the river cruise was an alum who ably painted a vivid portrait of the “city with big shoulders.”
What a weekend! I can hardly wait for the next Reunion! I love you, Northwestern.
