Memories of NU 1962-1966…
Freshman year, our football team was Number One in the nation...briefly...with Tommy Meyers passing to Paul Flatley.
We danced in the streets of Columbia, Ohio in 1962 after beating Ohio State.
Tommy Meyer's photo was on the cover of Sports Illustrated--and that's when we stopped winning.
Fall 1963, the JFK assassination caused the University to cancel classes the three days before Thanksgiving, making for a weeklong trip home.
That winter, we watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in dormitory TV lounges.
Bob Hope got an honorary doctorate and spoke at our Commencement on June 11, 1966.
During spring break, some from NU participated in the Civil Rights March in Selma, Alabama, and reported back at a big rally in the gym.
Adlai Stevenson, a graduate of NU's law school, spoke at the dedication of the lake fill. His notes blew away in the October breeze.
The winter of 64-65 brought blizzards to the North Shore.
More troops were sent to Vietnam and there were draft numbers.
